This review is from: Sky Blue Orange (Paperback) This absorbing and well-written book kept my interest from the start and had me flipping pages well into the morning hours! The story is interesting with some surprising plot twists. I found the main character, Sage, the owner of a small 1950's style motel, especially engaging. Evidently, this is the first in a series. I look forward to the next book from this author and highly recommend this one to all readers! 0 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Hitch "RaveningReader" (Scottsdale, AZ USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Sky Blue Orange (Blue Moon Mysteries Book 1) (Kindle Edition) I received this book on a Prime free promo. I'm really glad I took a chance on it! 0 In the Californian desert, town newcomer and new motel owner Sage Spencer is struggling to make ends meet while she renovates an old motel from the 1930's which she bought on impulse with the last of a family inheritance. Sage is managing to keep her head above water, and looking forward to a fully-booked 3-day holiday over a Fourth of July weekend, when a woman is found dead in one her her 12 motel rooms. The woman is a wealthy local socialite, and wasn't a registered guest at the motel. Sage's friend, Hank Porter, had booked the room for his grandson, a big rig driver. When the death looks suspicious--with no sign of the grandson in sight--not only does the truck-driving young man look good for the murder, but all of Sage's booked guests disappear almost magically, leaving the motel because of the murder. All of her upcoming business also cancels , creating a huge dent in her meager income. Sage slaves to keep her motel open and her three employees eating, while at the same time, various clues as to what really happened start to fall in her lap. Desperate to have the case closed, so that her business won't go bankrupt, she's relieved when the truck-driver is arrested for murder. But, when intimations arise that he may be innocent, Sage can't live with the idea that she'll benefit from a wrongful conviction, and starts to dig around into the lives of the local residents. Although the book's cover is uninspiring,I found this a perfectly enjoyable mystery read, falling into the almost-cozy category. The characters are pretty well drawn; Sage isn't perfect, but she's very real. Her romantic on-and-off-again love interest is a surprise himself, and the motel employees are well-formed, complete human beings. The rescued dog, Holden, adds a layer of depth to the protagonist's emotions that enable to he r to grow over the course of the story. The murderer isn't obvious, the reveal is well-done (although at one point, you could see it coming), but it still had a second reveal that made it enjoyable. If the rating system allowed it, I'd give it 3.5 stars. I think that Carolyn Rose fans would probably like this book, particularly if they liked "An Uncertain Refuge." If you like cozy mysteries, with protags over 40, give this book a try. In this case, do not judge the book by its cover--it's a far better book than the cover. I recommend this book for a nice, enjoyable recreational murder mystery read. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Sky Blue Orange (Blue Moon Mysteries Book 1) (Kindle Edition) This is a real page-turner... or a button-pusher, I guess, for those of us who purchased the Kindle edition. 0 I especially enjoyed the depiction of life in the California desert town of Cactus Springs... the author's descriptions are so vivid and true that the reader feels like s/he is right there with the main character. And while I was pretty sure I knew where the ending was going, the author *still* managed to surprise me at the very end! Bravo! I understand that this is the first in a series, which is fantastic because I look forward to the further adventures of Sage, Will, and the rest of the gang at the Blue Moon Motel! :D |
