It works right out of the box without any messing with the settings. Now, you do have to set the date and time manually. You will also need to put in a micro SD card. As for night time recording, light stars are present if there is a light source. Take a look at the video I posted and you will see what I mean. I saw some test footage on youtube and decided that the quality was more than enough for me. 0 I do wish it had a mode to record with the car off for more than the max of 3 minutes (15 minutes would be nice). I have been copying my videos to my PC every 3-4 days. The settings stay, but the last time i took the card out with the device on and it seemed to mess up all my settings. So EV/Brightness was set to +2, split recording was disabled, and several other things were different. Amazingly the date and time did not get reset (phew). The menu system on the device is fairly easy to use.
