This review is from: A Smart Girl's Guide to Staying Home Alone (American Girl) (Paperback) American Girl has hit another home run with the book 'A Smart Girls' Guide to Staying Home Alone'. The book is well written for both youth (my daughter is 11) and parents, not only was it helpful for her to read it, but reading the book made me realize that there really were some areas we hadn't talked about much. 0 Her favorite part of the book (and it might be one of mine as well) - is a pull-out section in the back where she can write her after school schedule (how much time for homework, are TV and internet allowed, etc.), a list of emergency numbers, and general house rules. It makes staying home alone a little less scary, but doesn't overshadow the fact that a girl (or boy!) needs to be cautious. Really an excellent find. 9 of 9 people found the following review helpful Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: A Smart Girl's Guide to Staying Home Alone (American Girl) (Paperback) Have a tween that needs to prepare for her older years and is interested in being able to stay home alone, even if she is not ready for a couple more years, this is a great book. It builds a sense of security with a great plan for staying safe while alone, a check list of must have items (even some you wouldn't typically think of but are brilliant). I also love how it explains the maturity levels required and helps to set those guidelines of when you will both know she is ready. I told my daughter, when I notice you can do things without being told like brush your teeth twice a day, throw out your trash without forgetting etc. then I will know you are trust worthy alone too. In a society where privileges are given for reaching a numerical age, it is refreshing to see one that depends of maturity and trust and responsibly. Also helped me to feel more comfortable about leaving her, when she is older. I believe in teaching before they are ready, so they k now what is expected. But also helpful if she is already old enough too. It would take about a week (for a busy family) to go through it and thoroughly explain with your daughter how the book relates to your expectations. 0 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful By Bitta (Columbus, OH) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: A Smart Girl's Guide to Staying Home Alone (American Girl) (Paperback) I bought this for my son and forewarned him it was "for girls" (gasp!). 99% of the book is good information for any child who is ready for independence and to start staying home alone. 0 |
