Oliver Twist's famous cry of the heart â" "Please, sir, I want some more" â" has resounded with generations of readers of all ages. The author poured his own youthful experience of Victorian London's unspeakable squalor into this realistic depiction of a spirited young innocent's unwilling but inevitable recruitment into a scabrous gang of thieves. Masterminded by the loathsome Fagin, the underworld crew features some of Dickens's most memorable characters, including the vicious Bill Sikes, gentle Nancy, and the juvenile pickpocket known as the Artful Dodger.

This review is from: Oliver Twist (Kindle Edition) (This is a review of the Kindle Serials edition of Oliver Twist.) I always had trouble plowing through 19th Century literature. Dickens seemed to be a genius story teller but the arc of his novels seemed wrong somehow. Reading Oliver Twist in the same pattern of installments it was written for in the first place makes it into a different reading experience. I hesitate to say this but I felt it was a different book when read this way. Apparently Dickens knew what he was doing but until now we had no way to get the books in the serial format the author wrote them. 0 I hope Amazon will publish the rest of Dickens' works as serials. They really are better this way. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful By Surferofromantica "S.O.R." (Singapore) - See all my reviews This review is from: Oliver Twist (Paperback) Oliver Twist is a fantastic tale! Dickens' second novel, after the episodic Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist was written by the young writer/editor as a dark, moralistic tale in conjunction with the lighter and farcical tale. It's a fascinating picture of the seedy underbelly of London of that time, and of the hypocritic and corrupt Victorian society that Dickens lived in. The tale of both repentant and unrepentant criminals is interesting, although too based on coincidence, and also strangely Oliver himself hardly appears in the second half! 0 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful By Patricia H Roghelia (DURHAM, NC, US) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Oliver Twist (Kindle Edition) I would like to have know how long it was between the updates. I am enjoying it very much, but would like to have the new chapters sooner. I bought 9 serial books and am finding it hard to keep up with what I have read before I get a new episode. 0 |
