The previous waterproof mattress cover I got was nothing like this. From my local baby mega store, I purchased a mattress cover with a quilted fleece top that was very thin and not soft and somewhat stiff. This cover has a soft, cushion-y feel since it has the cotton top. Beneath the cotton cover is a waterproof layer. I don't know what the waterproof layer is made of, but it seems like it can block moisture. I'm very happy with this and I like the soft, natural, non-plasticy feel it has.
