Finding cheap bike parts for your bike is always a bit of a challenge. But when it comes to finding quality yet cheap mountain bike gears youve raised the stacks even higher. You see and probably already know that mountain bike gears are one of the most critical parts of any bike.
They work extremely hard and are one of the main things that make it possible for mountain bikes to go where they do. Most MTB bikes these days have from 18 to 27 gears. Having so many gears makes easier to ride over different types of terrain from a slow hill climb to speeding along a flat road. With a wide range of gears it is possible to make those changes.
Typically mountain bikes have 3 chainrings on the crank where the pedals are. This provides 3 'ranges' of speed you can use depending on where you are riding at the moment. The smaller ring on the inside allows you to ride slower speeds for going over things or riding uphill. The middle one gives you medium speeds for flat roads or small hills. While the outer, largest ring is for higher speeds riding downhill or along flat roads. Many riders spend most of the time using the middle chainring.
You of course shift from one gear to another using the brake/gear levers which are generally mounted to the handlebars of the bike. There is typically 2 gear shifters with the one on the left used to activate the front gears and the one on the right activating the rear gears. These shifters make it convenient to shift from one gear to another. There are several different types that function similar but the differences are often a result of how smoothly they function and that directly affects the cost. Often the right one for you will depend on personal preference.
The shifters move the derailleurs which in turn cause the chain to move from one gear or chainring to another. There are typically two, one at the front chainrings and one at the rear which actually moves the chain from one sprocket to another as I already said. The derailleurs assure the smooth functioning of the chain, of speeds, of resistance. That is unless you plan on riding a single-speed bike and forget shifting gears at all which means you use the same gear going uphill as going down you need to make sure you're derailleurs function properly.
Knowing when to change gears on your bike is not always very intuitive to many people. It may seem like it should be simple but still many riders just getting into riding tend to ride in one or two gears and fail to take advantage of the gears they have to help them be more efficient in their riding.
As I said right from the start finding quality gear sets for your bike is not easy when you are looking to save money at the same time. Finding quality cheap bike parts could be one of the biggest challenges as they almost seem like opposites. But if you are going to find them you will only be able to do it online.
